• The role of a Data Scientist

An experienced data scientist is able to find non-trivial connections in large amounts of data. Nowadays you can find a data scientist's endproduct about everywhere. For example, when you shop online, you usually see recommendations of interesting products. These recommendations are based on products other customers bought. From that data, data is pulled of customers that have a profile similar to yours. This is non-trivial.  Even less trivial is the fact that those recommendations are generated in a split second. After all, while shopping you don't want to be delayed by the "recommendation engine".

Capgemini Academy can support you to acquire this knowledge. For this purpose, we have developed several training courses

What does a Data Scientist do?

As a data scientist you're responsible for developing algorithms to find these non-trivial connections. For this, you make use of your statistical knowledge. This field of expertise is going through a rapid development, which is fed by the enormous growth of all kinds of databases and the multiple possibilities to find connections within these databases.

Besides this, you have to understand how statistical work is applied in daily business. As your algorithms have to serve the business' needs. Using the example of the webshop with recommendations: the recommendations have to fit with the customer's usage  of the webshop. While doing this, it needs to find an optimum between the speed of generation and the accuracy of the recommendations.

When it comes to exploring the possibilities of data science, you are a partner for the business. Not everything that's scientifically possible, is relevant for the business. And vice versa, not every need of the business can be translated in to an algorithm.

    Which competences?

A proper performance in a Data Scientist's profession asks a lot. You have to be able to find your way in statistics for example. Our curriculum offers several training courses that can be used to develop these skills.

Besides this, the personal skills are also very important. You have to be able to discuss with the business about what kind of impediments they're running into and how these can be bridged with the help of statistics. Eventually when the algorithm is found, it also must be explained to the business. This requires proper consultancy skills. Our curriculum contains a proper amount of consultancy and communicational training courses that can help the data scientist.
